The racial/ethnic disparity plays a major role in a student's achievement. Regardless of family income levels, those who are of a different race/ethnicity other than White are more than likely to live in neighborhoods that lack the resources that are needed to live in a healthy and safe environment. However, according to the US Census in 2010, just like the majority of the cities in Rhode Island, Warwick is primarily populated by a White race with little diversity of other races all under 3.5%, so race is not necessarily a major negative factor in Warwick, Rhode Island.

District Data
These two data tables are significant because it shows how much Warwick students
are motivated to graduate high school and then to attend a higher education after graduating. Slightly less than the Rhode Island average of 79.7%, 77.1% of Warwick students graduate within 4 years. Although Warwick's percentage of 10.4% is quite high compared to Rhode Island's average of drop out students of 2.9%, of the three different districts, Warwick has the highest percentage of 4.6% of students who received their GED. This is significant because there is a possibility that for those student who had a difficult time in high school, were motivated enough to still move on and receive their GED. About 50% or more of students took the SATS and filled out the FASFAs. Although they have higher percentages than Central Falls students, the percentages are yet again lower than those of Barrington students. School Data
The district's data represents the school's data very similarly and accurately. Warwick Veterans Memorial High School has high attendance at the percentage of 91% which is higher than Central Falls High School that has an attendance rate of 88%. However, the chronic absenteeism of Warwick Veterans Memorial High School (27%) is higher than the state's average of 24%. This could possibly be due to the high percentages of students who use marijuana (36%) or alcohol (26%). There is no substantial population of families below the poverty level or single-parent homes in Warwick, which may also be contributing factors, but the drug use could potentially play a factor. Like many other aspects of the data comparing Warwick, Central Falls, and Barrington, Warwick is very average when it comes to the graduation rate within four years. 77.3 % of Warwick Veterans Memorial High School students graduate within 4 years, which is higher than Central Falls High School's graduation rate of 73.8%, but less than Barrington High School's graduation rate of 95.6%. This may be due to the fact that Barrington is a more affluent city and Central Falls is more of an inner city like environment which has an affect on student achievement.
ConclusionIn conclusion, Warwick Veterans Memorial High School is not necessarily the most top notch high school in Rhode Island, but it is better than most. Simply said, Warwick Veterans Memorial High School is very mediocre. The community has a slightly higher income than the norm within Rhode Island and the United States. There is a low percentage of 4.6% of families who are under the poverty level. The majority of children within the community are part of a two-parent family, with a percentage of only 23% who live in a single-parent home. Overall, the community has very little diversity of less than 10% of people with different race/ethnicity and the rest being of the white population. Concerning the health and safety of children in Warwick, there are only 4,749 children receiving medical assistance of the 96,215 children who need it in Rhode Island. There is no significant issue with teen birth rate, and low percentages of child abuse. One significant factor within the health and safety would be the high percentages than the norm of the rest of Rhode Island of marijuana and cigarette use. This drug use may be the most significant negative factor that affects the Warwick student’s academic achievements. Every other factor such as poverty, race, family background, health/safety, attendance, to SAT scores, Warwick has fallen into the average category. The statistics always match up almost perfectly to Rhode Island’s average, and always higher/lower (in a positive way) than Central Falls, a more inner city like community, and always higher/lower (in a negative way) than Barrington, a more affluent community. From personal experience, I believe that there is a great sense of community within the school. As the provided data above states, Warwick Veterans Memorial High School is not the most affluent high school, but it is not the worst. The school is like a big family. Mostly everyone knows everyone, although the school has almost 1,000 students. There is no bullying at our school except for the few students who just cause drama among one another. Students who re part of ALP, which is a different learning environment for those with special needs, are treated just like any other students by the faculty and students themselves. Recently, there was a threat to the school that it would be closing, and turned into a junior high school. The students, faculty, alumni, and many members within the community came together and as a result the school was not closed. This may not say much academically, but in order for someone to achieve, there needs to be a sense of community, where a student can feel comfortable to reach out to teachers and ask help, which will only lead to greater success.
